A musical adventure in Jet Boot Jack for Atari 8-bit.
Jet Boot Jack by Jon Williams is a game that publisher English Software liked so much, they made it headline three separate compilations of Atari 8-bit games as well as releasing it by itself. And to be fair, it is a very solid little platformer, combining familiar "collect 'em all" gameplay with some interesting and unusual mechanics. Plays well on The400 Mini, too!

A quick preview of Yars Rising
Просмотров 3139 часов назад
When Yars Rising was announced by Atari and WayForward, the response from some was confusion and, from some quarters, disgust. But having spent some time with the game thanks to its Steam Next Fest demo, I'm now well up for what this game has to offer; it looks set to be another wonderful WayForward exploration platformer, this time paying homage to numerous Atari properties not just Howard Sco...
Airball's impossible isometric adventures
Просмотров 23314 часов назад
Airball is an isometric puzzle adventure that originated on the TRS-80 "CoCo" Colour Computer (and its closely related counterpart, the Dragon 32). It was ported to a variety of other platforms, including the Atari 8-bit, which is the version you see here via The400 Mini. It's a cool, atmospheric game with some nice ideas, but ultimately the monstrous difficulty makes it hard for all but the mo...
Pogo Joe: better than Q*Bert?
Просмотров 10821 час назад
Pogo Joe for Atari 8-bit is a game I have some rather fond memories of, and returning to it recently on The400 Mini, I see that those memories were entirely justified. This is a great little bouncy-bouncy arcade-style game, with a lot more variety than the game it's rather shamelessly drawing inspiration from. Plus it has some brilliantly bizarre level names. #retrogaming #the400mini #atari8bit
Project Gotham Racing 3 is nearly 20 years old, but still feels fresh
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.День назад
Project Gotham Racing 3 came out on Xbox 360 in 2005, but it still feels fresh and exciting to play thanks to its varied, well-structured gameplay, satisfying arcade-style handling and solid presentation. In a world where heavy-duty sims and open-world "content games" are the norm for the racing genre, its breezy but challenging nature is refreshing to return to. NOTE: to avoid any risk of fall...

    I have this installed on my 400 mini, as I had it on floppy on my 130XE. I think I could get to level 4 when I was a kid. I do remember thinking that his Walkman headset made him look kind of like an old guy trying to look cool (and I grew up in the 80s). I had quite a few English Software releases. Their protagonists tended to be rather fragile and prone to dying from banging their heads or stubbing their toes.

    This actually looks interesting, and I will likely pick it up since it is relatively inexpensive and YR was my favorite 2600 game. It’s easier and more cost effective to animate 3-D models than sprites, which is why more studios are moving to 2 1/2-D over 2-D. I’m guessing that you’ve heard about the expansion of Atari 50. I’m personally looking forward to the “deep dive” they’re supposed to be doing into Berzerk.

    The way that unexplored keywords float around your character during conversations is such a brilliant way to compromise between a very traditional text-parsing dialogue system and a modern, intuitive-but-highly-limited system. It was funny, when I first started playing this game I distinctly remember thinking that I loved everything about it but my one complaint was that I wished there were an easier method of remembering the keywords I hadn't yet discussed with a character without writing them down. I had been so focused on the actual dialogue box that I wasn't looking at my character and thus hadn't noticed that Fluttermind had already considered and addressed that exact concern in such an elegant, unintrusive, and effective way.

    • @ThisIsPete
      @ThisIsPete 3 дня назад

      It's great, isn't it? Really shows the value of someone who understands both what made the old classics enjoyable, and recognises where subtle modern conveniences can enhance those feelings without compromising the feeling of "authenticity".

    • @ladams391
      @ladams391 3 дня назад

      @@ThisIsPete Indeed, this game is the very definition of a passion project made by someone who isn't just familiar with the type of game they're making and what makes it good but knows them well enough that they can see what potential pitfalls they need to address. Moonring may be the best example to date that demonstrates that while a couple decades ago the gaming industry at large chose the route of using ever-increasing hardware power and easy to use dev tools to chase photorealistic graphics and spectacle, that isn't the only path to making improvements on the classics. Instead of fancy 3D graphics or something like that Fluttermind instead used the extra power and capabilities of modern tech to make changes to the formula that games like Ultima established that are outwardly subtle but have a big impact on the overall gameplay experience and presentation, like how the dialogue system keywords fade in and float around using rendering tech that couldn't exist in the original Ultima titles or how the tile, object, and UI graphics periodically shift between an imitation of the different four-color palettes available in CGA 320x200 mode for that nostalgic look and feel but which palette is active depends on factors in the game world itself and can dynamically change at any time depending on the state of the game world (I believe the main factor is which of the gods' moons is the one that is currently risen and visible in the sky and is therefore casting the light in the colors associated with that god onto the land below) instead of being arbitrary or on a set schedule, it kind of blows my mind how clever of an idea that is. I apologize for the wall of text but honestly I could talk for hours about all the little detailed ways in which Fluttermind implemented solutions to problems of and improvements on classic CRPGs that are seamlessly tied into both the player experience on a mechanical and presentational level as well as the narrative and world building of the game world, it's so brilliant.

    When you're digging areas for the enemies to get rid of them, it's better to not eat all dirt in the area but rather make paths in the dirt so it takes them time to get through. If you eat all of it, they'll just move around the diameter and return much sooner since all they do is follow a wall.

    I'm skeptical but I will give it a shot. Personally, if Atari wants to do something more involved than just remaking/updating their classic games, I think it would be fun if they could do something with the old Atari Force comics DC published, although the rights there are probably complicated.

    I've found two different schools of thought with regard to isometric controls. Where Time Stood Still and Great Escape: push UP to go up and left. Jon Ritman's Batman, Rex Hard.. push UP to go up and right. Head Over Heels as well. That music is initially delightful but then does start to grate. Which is a shame. But a lovely concept and nicely executed too.

    To tell you the truth, I hadn't really heard of the IP despite watching you fairly regularly as well as dedicated shump channels (which almost always focused on arcade games from the 90s onwards). For that reason, it just looked like Wayforward getting their groove back on with an old IP - given that they made some bad 3D games recently and also messed up with the RWBY IP, I'll take something good. That said, I'd prefer even for cases like this if they could find a way to have both the original IP of shooters continue as well as this 2D exploration platformer. Mario has kept 2D and 3D platformers, RPGs, sports and even had variety in each. Sustaining 2 styles isn't easy but can appease people.

      Original Yars is still live and kicking! There's been a standalone "Yars Recharged" game by Atari, and Digital Eclipse did a great take on it as part of Atari 50, where the original 2600 code was running underneath, but overlaid with fancy new visuals.

    I can't help but feel going for the colours was a detriment to this version of the game, especially considering the original (which I guess would have been the Dragon over the CoCo) was running in monochrome (for the resolution). I love seeing folks go beyond the basic inspired-by-Ultimate tropes for their isometric games, but some of the room design feels like it's blocking a little too much of the view, and that's something I'm not a big fan of. Especially when trying to get to grips with a room.
